Botox is one of the most prolific neuromodulators, a class of drugs often referred to as “wrinkle relaxers.” It is the most widely used on the market and the world’s first approved medication of its kind. It has been in use by medical professionals since 1989 and today is practically synonymous with anti-aging. Often, people use the word “Botox” to refer to other neuromodulators as well.
In 2019, more than 5 million Botox and Botox-like injections were performed. In 2020, despite the global pandemic that kept people out of medical offices, that number held strong at more than 4.4 million. In both years, as fillers became increasingly more popular, neuromodulators still beat out dermal fillers by more than a million procedures.
As our bodies go through the natural aging process, a few critical functions begin to decline after the age of 20. (Well, more than a few, but a few pertaining to your cosmetic appearance specifically.) The first and most impactful is our production of collagen.
Collagen constitutes 30% of all the protein in our body, and it is the primary substance responsible for making sure our skin stays taut and youthful. So, when that production begins to wean, it can be expected to notice a decline in our skin's elasticity.
Other proteins like elastin and filler substances like hyaluronic acid also begin to decline around this age as well. There is nothing we can do to prevent these processes from occurring — even people who are dedicated to prevention will at some point notice their skin beginning to wrinkle.
Botox tackles the problems that result from this decline, like fine lines and wrinkles, by stopping the other function that causes them: muscle movement.
As we go about our days, we use our faces to convey feelings and supplement our words. Surprise, shock, envy, anger, irritation, intrigue, joy, contentedness, stress, boredom — these are just a few of the emotions that can be conveyed through facial expressions.
Unfortunately, it comes at a cost. Every time your face makes an expression, muscles contract and cause the skin in the area to fold. Fold it enough times and you begin to develop wrinkles that become painstakingly obvious whenever you are talking. Keep folding, and eventually, those wrinkles will be noticeable even when your face is at rest.
Stopping the movement before it happens can both prevent wrinkling from occurring and help to smooth out existing wrinkles. Unfortunately, there are no other categories of treatment that can address these facial conditions in the same way and with the same efficacy. To put it plainly, we need Botox because other options are few and far between.
The first and most studied brand of wrinkle relaxer, Botox, is best used to prevent and treat lines in the upper face, i.e. frown lines, bunny lines and crow's feet. However, it has also proven to be successful for other areas and concerns, including lip lines, gummy smiles and neck bands, to name a few. It takes approximately 2 to 14 days for Botox to take effect, and it generally lasts three to four months.
Dysport has been FDA-approved since 2009. While it can be used for the same purposes as Botox, Dysport is only FDA-approved for moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines or "elevens."
When you come to your appointment at Bespoke Rx in Tampa, we will personally assess your skin and determine the best course of action to give you the results you are looking for.
The Botox treatment is quick, taking only a couple of minutes to complete with minimal downtime required. You are free to continue with your day once the treatment is over and wait for the results to reach their full strength over the next two weeks.
This product has been proven safe in many clinical studies, and serious side effects are rare. This ease of treatment is partly why Botox has been the most used cosmetic product on the market for many years running.
We use a thin needle to deliver small, targeted doses of Botox to the facial muscles. While this may sound uncomfortable, patients typically tolerate this quick treatment very well.
Most people experience few, if any, side effects after Botox treatment. You may experience mild irritation, swelling and bruising around the injection site, which typically resolves within a couple of days.
Most men and women over the age of 18 can be a candidate for Botox injections. No matter your age, gender or skin tone, Botox may be suitable for you, providing that you are in relatively good health.
If you are worried you might be too young or too old to start these rejuvenation treatments, know that there’s no right age to start. Botox and similar wrinkle relaxers are used both to prevent wrinkle formation in people in their 20s as well as to soften existing wrinkles in mature skin.
Still, there are circumstances in which we may not be able to provide such treatments safely, including if you:
It is also important to keep in mind that the best candidates are those who have realistic expectations about their procedures. If you come in thinking that Botox will be the end-all to your cosmetic concerns, you are setting yourself up for disappointment, even if your treatment would otherwise be considered successful.
Additionally, if you are taking blood thinners or have a history of bleeding problems, it’s best to consult with your doctor before getting Botox injections.
Neuromodulators such as Dysport and Botox are composed of Botulinum Toxin. This quick, relatively painless procedure takes approximately 2-14 days to take effect and typical results last approximately 3 months.
Neuromodulators (Wrinkle Relaxers) typically last 3-4 months. Fillers vary greatly depending on product and placement.
