Dermaplaning is a style of hair removal and exfoliation that involves lightly scraping the surface of your skin with a sterile surgical blade. This process removes dead and damaged skin cells that can clog your pores, add texture and dryness to your skin, cause breakouts and contribute to an overall dull complexion. Dermaplaning also removes fine vellus hair (better known as peach fuzz) to leave you with soft and smooth skin.
The unique shape of a dermaplaning blade allows us to navigate the contours of the face safely. Because dermaplaning does not use harsh chemicals or abrasive particles like some exfoliation methods, we can use it in delicate and hard-to-reach areas, and it is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.
Your dermaplaning treatment can:
Dermaplaning is suitable for many skin types and concerns. It may be a great choice for you if:
While it is safe for most people, there are some instances where we do not recommend dermaplaning. You might not be a candidate if:
There is not a lot to do to prepare for your dermaplaning treatment, but following these guidelines will help you get the best results:
Before the exfoliation starts, your provider will cleanse your skin to remove any dirt, oil or makeup residue. Then, using a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle, your provider will scrape the surface of your skin in light, feathering strokes. You might feel a slight tickling sensation, but the treatment is not painful.
Depending on what your skin needs, we may apply a soothing mask, hydrating serum or other products after the exfoliation for additional benefits. The complete treatment typically takes about 30-45 minutes.
Your skin will feel smoother and look brighter right away. Many patients are amazed at how soft their skin feels after the treatment. Some people experience slight redness, but it is mild and usually subsides within a few hours.
You can return to your normal activities immediately after dermaplaning. Consider sticking to gentle, non-irritating skincare products for the first few days. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily.
The removal of dead skin cells and vellus hair allows light to reflect more evenly off the surface of your skin. This immediately gives you a noticeable glow and radiance.
Once you get home, you may notice that your skincare products absorb more readily and that your makeup applies more smoothly. Your complexion may appear more even-toned and refined.
Most patients find their results last about three to four weeks before they start to notice the need for another treatment. We can help you develop a treatment schedule that keeps your skin smooth and bright.
The vellus hair will grow back normally. Dermaplaning does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker.
Treatment frequency depends on your individual skin needs and goals.
If you are looking for regular maintenance, most patients benefit from treatments approximately once per month. This matches our natural cellular turnover cycle and helps maintain consistently smooth, radiant skin.
If you have a special event coming up, you may wish to schedule a session about a week before to prepare your skin for flawless makeup application.
Note that over-exfoliation can be counterproductive, so we do not recommend dermaplaning more frequently than every two weeks.
