Microneedling is a popular cosmetic procedure that restores vibrance and volume to your facial appearance. During a standard microneedling session, a series of microinjuries are made on the surface of your skin with a medical-grade device equipped with numerous tiny needles. These microinjuries trigger your body’s natural healing response, flooding the area with a variety of growth factors.
One of these substances is collagen, the most abundant protein found in our bodies. Unfortunately, typically after the age of 20, our bodies begin to lose 1% of their collagen production every year — bad news for our skin since it is also the primary protein responsible for keeping our skin taut and youthful.
In addition to the collagen, other growth factors and proteins are also introduced. The combination of these ingredients can help solve a variety of textural and tonal aesthetic concerns. This makes microneedling a very versatile treatment that can treat a wide range of cases.
PRF, also known as platelet-rich fibrin, is a substance added to the microneedling process to provide even more substantial results. You may have already heard of PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, which has been used in many different medical applications for years. PRF is an advanced approach to PRP treatment.
We extract PRF from your blood in the same way you have blood work performed. The blood is then transferred into a centrifuge, which separates platelets from the other compounds in the blood. In PRP, a blood thinner is used, but PRF does not use the same additives, making it a much more natural alternative approach. Since there is no blood thinner in PRF, the blood that is used can clot much more easily, further boosting growth factors.
PRP is spun at a much faster rate, separating and damaging more parts of the blood than PRF. The slower spin rate of PRF allows for more white blood cells, and platelets to survive in the final product that is used in the treatment, which means more healing factors and better results. This is what differentiates PRP and PRF.
PRF is applied to the skin during the microneedling process so, as the wounds are made, the rich substance is absorbed into the skin. The concentrated concoction significantly improves the final results of your microneedling treatment.
Many people suffer from a wide range of aesthetic concerns. Fine lines, wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, discoloration — these are just a few of the cosmetic conditions that can damage someone’s confidence.
Unfortunately, there are not many ways to improve the appearance of textural and tonal concerns in facial skin outside of microneedling. You can have dermal fillers and Botox performed for volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, but most of the other issues that arise can’t be addressed in the same way. To put it simply, we need microneedling because alternative solutions to all the other cosmetic concerns are few and far between.
Microneedling can be performed successfully on all skin tones and types. The treatment has limited side effects and requires little downtime and is suitable for men and women who struggle with particular cosmetic concerns.
The microneedling device is versatile and can be performed on many parts of the body. While it is most commonly used on the face, it can also be used on other body parts like the neck, chest, hands, back and scalp.
Microneedling may be an excellent treatment if you struggle with any of the following:
We recommend all of our patients do ample research and bring as many questions as they have to their initial consultation. When given the right information, you can ensure that you have reasonable expectations about what microneedling can achieve. Otherwise, you might find yourself disappointed about an otherwise successful session.
Our medical professionals will review your medical history, examine your conditions, and listen to your aesthetic goals during your initial consultation. Then, we will determine whether microneedling is the appropriate solution to your concerns.
Our priority is providing you with results, not just getting you to have a lot of procedures performed. But in some instances, it can be beneficial to combine multiple methods to achieve the look you are aiming for.
There is no lengthy preparation period made, but we generally recommend that you avoid excessive sun exposure or alcohol consumption leading up to your procedure. It would be best to avoid any amount of nicotine or smoking since it can drastically reduce your ability to heal and damage your results.
In some rare cases, you will be given instructions on medication or lifestyle changes that need to be made before your microneedling session. These changes are usually very minor and are made to ensure the best and safest results possible.
Before undergoing your microneedling treatment, we may recommend that you use a medical-grade skin care product to prepare your skin and make it healthier. We may also ask that you increase your water intake to quicken the recovery process and avoid sunburns or excessive UV exposure. In some cases, you may also need to stop using irritating skin care products for a week prior to the treatment. During your consultation, we will help you figure out the exact steps you should take.
Your microneedling treatment will begin with your provider cleansing your skin and applying a topical numbing agent that will help mitigate discomfort. Once the topical numbing agent has taken effect, we will start microneedling the device evenly across your skin.
Most patients report that they feel no substantial pain or discomfort during the entire treatment. Still, you may notice a sensation that feels similar to having fine sandpaper lightly grazed against the skin.
When the treatment is complete, your skin will look like it has a moderate sunburn. This sensation may persist for a day or two, but the vast majority of patients report that they can easily tolerate the side effects.
We ask that all of our patients avoid sun exposure and other environmental factors that could harm the skin since your dermal layers are more susceptible to damage immediately after the procedure and in the first few days of recovery.
In some cases, you may decide that you want to tackle two cosmetic concerns simultaneously. Or, after listening to your aesthetic goals, our medical professionals might decide that your results are better attained through multiple procedures rather than one.
This will never be done in an effort to sign you up for more expenses — we are conservative with the treatment we do, but our priority will always be giving you the best experience possible.
Microneedling can be performed alongside a lot of different procedures since it is minimally invasive. Our patients often combine it with procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, lip fillers or chemical peels to maximize the amount of improvement made to their appearance.
If you are interested in having multiple procedures performed, let us know as soon as possible so we can begin to create the perfect treatment plan for your goals.
A single microneedling session will cost $600 while a 3 treatment package of microneedling with prf will cost $1500. Most patients will need between two and four sessions to achieve ideal results. Some patients may need more than four, especially if they are looking to improve concerns like acne scarring.
Keep in mind this is a ballpark estimate — you will be provided with an accurate price during your consultation once our team has been able to thoroughly review your conditions and goals.
