Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Bringing out your natural beauty

Almost everyone wants great skin. But while some are naturally endowed with a seemingly flawless complexion, others need a dedicated routine to keep their skin looking its best.

Uneven skin tone, large pores, wrinkles and dark under-eye circles are some of the more hard-to-treat complaints we see in our patients almost daily. Many of these patients have tried a plethora of remedies, from expensive skincare products and detox diets to lifestyle changes and correcting hormone imbalances. But these approaches don’t always produce the desired results — which is when we may recommend platelet-rich fibrin therapy.

Platelet-rich fibrin therapy is an emerging noninvasive treatment that uses your body’s own healing properties to give you smooth, even and glowing skin. It can address a wide range of complexion problems, including acne scars, sun damage and dullness, crepey skin and hollows, and even hair restoration.

If you are a resident of the Tampa, FL, region and are curious about this revolutionary treatment, please schedule a consultation with Bespoke Rx or call us at (813) 203-6196 today! One of our providers will be happy to create a customized treatment plan to address your unique concerns.

What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin therapy?

What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin therapy?

Platelet-rich fibrin therapy is a novel form of skin rejuvenation that utilizes compounds from your own blood plasma in combination with microneedling to increase your skin’s collagen production. You may hear it referred to as microneedling with platelet-rich fibrin or be familiar with a similar treatment called “the vampire facial.” Platelet-rich fibrin therapy is an advanced version of platelet-rich plasma treatments.

Unlike some other skin rejuvenation treatments, platelet-rich fibrin therapy does not involve the injection of foreign substances into the skin. Instead, we use platelet-rich fibrin generated from your blood to stimulate your skin’s natural healing process. This minimizes the risk of allergic reactions and results in natural-looking complexion improvements. Platelet-rich fibrin contains high concentrations of platelets, leukocytes (white blood cells), and other growth factors to trigger cellular renewal and collagen production.

To introduce platelet-rich fibrin into your skin, we use SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared and US-made microneedling device. It comes with disposable cartridges containing tiny needles that create microchannels in the skin. The needling technology itself boosts collagen production, but it is even more effective when used in conjunction with platelet-rich fibrin.

Benefits of Platelet-Rich Fibrin therapy

Skin imperfections that we treat at Bespoke Rx with platelet-rich fibrin therapy include:

  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone/texture
  • Sun damage/hyperpigmentation
  • Dark circles
  • Fine lines/wrinkles
  • Dull-looking skin

Other benefits of platelet-rich fibrin therapy are that it is safe, effective and suitable for all skin tones. The treatment itself is relatively quick; however, it has to be carried out in three to four sessions monthly for best results. Substantial improvements may not be noticeable until at least a few treatments as it takes time to take effect, unlike faster-acting treatments like dermal fillers or wrinkle-relaxers.

PRF vs. PRP: What Is the Difference?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been a popular choice in regenerative aesthetics for years. Like PRF, PRP is a platelet concentrate that stimulates skin tissue repair and regeneration, as well as new collagen and elastin production.

PRF represents the next generation of treatments in this category. You can think of it as PRP 2.0, and it has some exciting benefits over its predecessor:

  • More Powerful Ingredients: PRF contains platelets, growth factors, white blood cells and stem cells, while PRP only contains platelets and some growth factors.
  • No Artificial Additives: PRF is processed without additives. PRP’s extraction process requires anticoagulants to thin the blood.
  • Gentler Processing: PRF is centrifuged at lower speeds, which helps preserve more of the beneficial components. PRP is processed at a higher speed.
  • Extended Release of Growth Factors: PRF forms a gel-like matrix that releases growth factors gradually. This means it is “active” for a longer period, while PRP releases growth factors quickly and the “active” period is shorter.
  • Potentially Superior Results: The extended release of growth factors, inclusion of more beneficial components and higher concentrations of those components may lead to better outcomes with PRF.

At Bespoke Rx, we prioritize staying on top of developments in aesthetic medicine, and our choice of PRF over PRP is a perfect example of this commitment.

What to expect during treatment

What to expect during treatment

After you have scheduled a consultation at Bespoke Rx, one of our trained providers will assess if you’re a good candidate for platelet-rich fibrin therapy and take you through the process. They will inform you of the best course of action, including how many sessions you may need to undergo and what results to expect. You’ll also be advised on proper skincare before undergoing treatment.

During the treatment, your practitioner will take a small sample of blood from your arm, and then refine it in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich fibrin. In the meantime, they will sanitize the treatment area and then apply a topical numbing agent. Once you’re ready, your practitioner will apply the platelet-rich fibrin to your skin and move the microneedling device over it. This will create tiny punctures up to 2mm deep in the skin, which may sometimes result in mild bleeding.

The procedure should last no more than an hour, depending on the size of the treated area and what you’re being treated for.

After the treatment, your Bespoke Rx practitioner will apply a serum to help calm your skin and reduce discomfort. You’ll be encouraged to use sunscreen and proper skincare products in the weeks following treatment.

FAQS

Answers by Amanda Conti
APRN

What exactly is Platelet-Rich Fibrin?

Platelet-rich fibrin is an improved version of platelet-rich plasma. It is a protein matrix obtained from blood plasma through centrifugation. Platelets release several growth factors which stimulate collagen production and wound healing.

Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin therapy safe?

The procedure uses your body’s own healing compounds and natural potential to stimulate skin rejuvenation, which reduces the risk of immune reaction. Our providers are also trained to minimize infection through the use of clean equipment and good practice.

Isn’t pricking the skin bad?

Clinical evidence has found that the micro-punctures created through microneedling are not damaging to the skin. In fact, these punctures paired with platelet-rich fibrin help tissue soften and revascularize.

Am I a good candidate?

If you are over 18 years old and in relatively good health, you are probably a good candidate. However, you may not be a candidate for this treatment if you have moderate to severe eczema, extreme keloids or are taking blood thinners. One of our providers will assess whether or not this treatment option is suitable for you and any alternatives you may wish to consider.

Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin therapy suitable for all skin tones?

Yes! This minimally invasive treatment is safe for all skin tones. It is even considered a great alternative to laser therapy for darker skin tones prone to hyperpigmentation.
